Weak and Sensitive Teeth in Children
If your child’s teeth look patchy, discoloured or crumbly, or they complain of sensitivity when brushing or eating, they may have chalky teeth. This is a common developmental condition, and early care makes a real difference.
What are chalky teeth?
Chalky teeth (also known as molar hypomineralisation or enamel defects) develop when the enamel doesn’t form properly. Affected teeth are softer and more porous than normal, which makes them prone to sensitivity, breakdown and decay. It most often affects the first permanent molars.
Signs to look out for
White, cream, yellow or brown patches on the teeth
Teeth that chip or crumble easily
Sensitivity to cold, air, sweet foods or brushing
Reluctance to brush certain areas of the mouth
How we can help
Treatment depends on how severely the teeth are affected. Options may include fluoride varnish and protective sealants, desensitising treatments, tooth-coloured fillings, or stainless steel crowns to protect weakened back teeth. We’ll also share home-care tips to keep sensitivity under control.
